Developing Your Own Style (Final Submission)

Process Images

I began my model making journey with this rough paper model
of my real-life study. The above model shows my
lack of experience with model making as seen in
the exposed joinery of the edges as well as the poorly calculated
wall heights.

Next, I created this model out of card. It is clear that this model
is significantly better, with clean edges and hidden joinery.

After creating these two models I began designing my dream study.

This is the rough initial sketch of my dream study.
It shows the layout of the room and provided direction for my final model.

In order to save on material waste, I designed my net for the final study on Illustrator to ensure exact measurements and optimal usage of the card I had available. This can be seen in the net of my study and the staircase below.

In order to create the skylight, I created the pattern on Illustrator. This was then printed and cut out with an Exacto knife. Using Illustrator ensured the accuracy of the final skylight.

Once these two documents were printed and then formed I was able to create the model as seen below. The model has many aesthetic features and shows the vast improvement of my model making skills.

In order to communicate the model as effectively as possible, I began experimenting with lighting to test how various lights affect the feel of a model.
This image shows one of my experiments with lighting.
I tested how warm lighting creates a welcoming feel and
instantly calms an individual viewing the model.

This form of lighting was then utilised when photographing my model as seen below.

To continue experimenting with lighting I tested how a more white light would affect my model.

Week 10 - Progress

With the skills learned from the first photoshopped model, I was able to create an effective and aesthetically pleasing creation in a much shorter time. Each model has been created to reflect its environment with a more 'beachy' feel in the first and a more overcast feel in the second. Each model shows the importance of style choices and the difference colour and lighting can make to a space.

Fusion Models and Laser Cut File

Week 5 activity

Week 7 activity

This week I have created a model based on my initials, LPC

Week 8 Activity

Model 1: In this model, I took the colour of my favourite soccer team, FCBarcelona. Blue and red has been the colour combination worn the team since their foundation in 1899. The team is a very important aspect in my life and means a great deal to me, highlighting the relationship of this model to me.

Model 2: In this model, I chose the material combination of white and gold due to its heavy use within churches around the world. As a practicing catholic my faith means a lot to me and so this material combination very much reflects this aspect of my life.

Model 3: Lastly, the material combination of marble and wood was chosen due to it reoccurring often in my life. My house contains frequent combinations of marble and wood and is one of my favourite material combinations.

Week 8 Progress (Incomplete)

Composited Image

My progress so far. Shadow and brightness adjustments still need to be added
in order to create more realism. The handrail also need to be composited.

Week 7 - Dream Study with Additional Light Source

Additional Light Source

The scale of 1:30 was chosen after discussion with my tutorial leader. After experimenting with scale size, it was found that 1:20 was too large, yet 1:50 was too small. Following this, the decision was made to use the 1:30 scale, due to a lack of resources available to me.

A patterned skylight was added to the space as a way to introduce natural light, aesthetically. The pattern adds an interesting feature beyond simply allowing more light into the space. The images below show a representation of direct sunlight through the skylight whilst the images with the scale figure represent a diffused light source.

Scale Figure Photographs

Warm and cool light sources were once again experimented with.
